This week's pictures from the past
A round-up of this week's Shropshire Star nostalgia pictures, from Craven Arms to the West Mid Show of 1967.
Remember this? Mrs Liz Birnie, of Old Street, Ludlow, says: "It's the wonderful Craven Arms and Stokesay Station showing its wonderful architecture, in 1966.
"I thought people would be interested in this photo as it was a beautiful old station when I was a teenager. It was knocked down many years ago. It's such a shame."
The photographer was her late father Piotr Borowik, whose first name was anglicised as Peter. He was Polish and became a naturalised Briton. He served with Polish forces as part of the Eighth Army. The family lived at Kempton, near Lydbury North.
With their float depicting a "typical English summer" at the West Mid Show at Shrewsbury in 1967 are these members of Alberbury Young Farmers Club.
They are, from left, David Sheppard, Robert Dudleston, Alan Leeke, Jean Wilson (nee Thomas) and Peter Stokes – and John Edwards in the cow.
Lucy Stokes, of the group, says: "The photograph is part of a collection we are making to commemorate Alberbury Young Farmers' 60th anniversary. The photograph, among others, will be on display at a celebration dinner dance on July 18 at Pecknall Farm, near Alberbury.
If any past or present members are interested in attending the event then they are very welcome to contact me (Lucy Stokes, 60th committee secretary) on 07977553842."
A couple of days ago we had a nostalgic look at the platform of the old, disappeared, Craven Arms & Stokesay railway station building and today we're taking a look at the outside. This is another photo loaned by Mrs Elizabeth Birnie, of Ludlow, and taken by her late father Piotr "Peter" Borowik in 1966.
"We lived in Kempton, near Lydbury North, and Craven Arms was our nearest station. It shows my mother picking my sister-in-law up when she came to stay while my brother was in Aden in the Army," she said. "From left are my mother Mrs Marjorie Borowik, daughter-in-law Janet Chambers and baby Donna, my brother Jan Borowik and my sister Annabell Borowik, of Craven Arms."
The Mini was her father's and was a hand-controlled vehicle as Mr Borowik had been disabled as a result of an accident during wartime service.
Hello girls! These ladies were on a GPO float at a Shrewsbury carnival. The year is not known, but according to Tony Williams, of Shrewsbury, who e-mailed us this picture, it could be the early 1960s. Does anybody recognise them?
Tony says: "The young ladies on the float were most likely to be operators in the Shrewsbury exchange. The photo was found in the workshop cupboards of the late Reg Jones, who lived in Condover, who was a carpenter/bodybuilder at the GPO depot for many years, and he most probably built the float."
Thanks to 87-year-old Ernie Gwilliam, of Bayston Hill, for e-mailing us this photo which he tells us was taken in the early 1950s and shows staff at the British Rail goods depot at Castle Foregate, Shrewsbury, about to board a coach for an outing to Blackpool.
Ernie can recall some of the names. Back, from left, are: "Bert", unknown, Cliff Gregory, Ernie himself, Jack Grimshaw, two unknowns, Ben Moore, unknown, Frank Marshall, Tom Richards, "Bill" and Fred Eaves.
Centre are: Dick Evans, two unknowns, Eunice Chaney, five unknowns, Mr Sedgewick and Dave Rogers.
"I don't recall the names on the front row, nor the children. Some relatives may recognise them," said Ernie.
"I was employed at British Rail for 20 years."
