Meet the Painter family, seen in Merry Lane, Sansaw.

This photo from the Frank Painter Collection comes to us via Shrewsbury transport historian Roy Pilsbury and shows, from left, Frank Painter, and Doris Painter in the sidecar, and then Frank Painter's mother.

His father John is on the second motorcycle.

The others on the photo are not identified.

Although the photo is undated, it looks to be around 1912 perhaps a motorcycle historian could narrow it down.nextpageTraction engine 'Olive' at Dorrington sand pit filling up with water on the way to Church Stretton Traction engine Olive fills up with water at Dorrington sand pit on the way to Church Stretton in the early 1960s.

Llanfair Caereinion landscape, general view, as seen in a postcard franked at Welshpool on August 24, 1906. Llanfair Caereinion church on right. It was posted to 'Miss Francis, Varchrel (?), Pool Quay, Welshpool.' The message was: 'Dear M, We are thinking of coming as far on Thursday but do not put yourselves out of the way as it is rather uncertain but we hope to come there will be about four of us maybe.' Signature unreadable. May be 'David'. Postcard was by the 'J.W. Ellis Llanfair Caereinion Series'. This is one of a number of postcards loaned by Mrs Doris Pickstock, of 4 Park Street Close, Oswestry, SY11 2HH 01691 671254. She says they were in a box of books bought by her late husband around 25 years ago. Mrs Pickstock thinks many of them were his father's sisters when they were in service, writing to another sister who lived at home with their parents. Her husband's aunty was Matilda Pickstock, known as Tilly Pickstock. Her married name was Watkin. She was the one who lived at home. When she was at home she lived at Arddleen and later at Llandrinio. Library code: Llanfair Caereinion nostalgia 2009.This postcard of Llanfair Caereinion was posted to "Miss Francis, Varchrel, Pool Quay, Welshpool" on August 24, 1906.

The unpunctuated message was: "Dear M, We are thinking of coming as far on Thursday but do not put yourselves out of the way as it is rather uncertain but we hope to come there will be about four of us maybe."

The signature is unreadable but the postcard itself was from the "J.W. Ellis Llanfair Caereinion Series."

Christine Heath of Shrewsbury emailed us this old Wellington Journal & Shrewsbury News photo which she found in her late father¹s belongings, and is trying to find out something about it. ³My father was John Griffiths MBE, rear gunner in the RAF during World War Two on Lancasters and then served in the Korean War on Sunderlands. He died in 2007 from cancer caused by asbestos from the Lancs. The RAF were wonderful to me and helped all they could. I currently have a calendar for sale with a lot of his photos in. It is being sold in aid of the RAFA.² The highly decorated lady facing the camera is identifiably the Princess Royal (daughter of King George V) and we think the occasion is her visit to Copthorne Barracks, Shrewsbury, on April 10, 1943, where she inspected members of the ATS (Auxiliary Territorial Service) and presented a testimonial to a member of the ATS, i.e. a Private Stannard, for gallantry in rescuing a companion from the River Severn. "It was the first car I ever had. I had not long come out of the Army. It had a pre-select gearbox. A policeman who used to live at West Felton bought it who used to deal in cars a bit. We part exchanged it for an Austin 10," said Oliver, who is now 76 and living at Hyssington, although at the time of the photo he and Wallace (now living in Shrewsbury) lived at Bentlawnt.

"It was taken at Lady House Dingle, Drury Lane, which is down towards Plox Green," added Mr Pryce.nextpageOpencast mining at Steeraway, Wellington. We've used some pictures of opencast mining in this slot recently, and that prompted Phil Hall of Steeraway, Wellington, to loan us this photo of mining which was more or less literally on his doorstep.

It shows the opencast mining at Steeraway which took place over four years he thinks it was from 1978 until 1982.

There's a glimpse of his own home on the extreme left hand edge, centre.

Top is the M54 and bottom is Steeraway Farm. Mr Hall says the untouched area top right is soon to be mined as part of a controversial plan which has recently been given the go-ahead.
