The Christmas travel nightmare was grinding on today with more snow and ice causing havoc on the roads and further disruption for rail and air services.
Plunging overnight temperatures have transformed many of yesterday's snowfalls into treacherous surfaces, with the Met Office warning of "widespread icy roads" for most of England and Wales and more snowfalls for the southern half of the country.

The cold snap also appears to have claimed the life of a 35-year-old man, who is believed to have frozen to death.
Donald Martin, 35, died in hospital after being found unconscious in the back garden of his home on the island of Lewis on Saturday.
And a grandmother is in a serious condition in hospital after she became locked out of her Midlothian home in sub-zero temperatures.

Reports suggested both had been returning home from Christmas nights out.
Travellers were today facing more train and flight cancellations and delays, although several airports have reopened runways.
Yesterday's heavy snowfalls left many roads in the Home Counties gridlocked with London and the South East worst hit for vehicle breakdowns. The AA dealt with more than 20,000 breakdowns by the end of the night - more than twice the normal level.
Manchester airport - where passengers had to endure long waits to reach check-in desk - gave out food, water and blankets to people stranded by delays.

Shropshire Council today closed the Burway, which leads to the Long Mynd near Church Stretton, because of the icy conditions.
A spokesman said: "The council would like to advise people to take notice of this closure and not use this route during this icy spell."
Shropshire has so far escaped the worst of the weather but police warned that people joining the Christmas getaway still had to take care.
Inspector Mark Hatton said: "The roads around Shropshire are generally clear but there are icy conditions further south in the force area so people must be aware of that."

The weather has also delayed work on Fitz Bridge in Montford Bridge, near Shrewsbury, which was damaged when a large vehicle hit it two months ago.
The bridge will now not reopen before Christmas because the £60,000 repair work had to be suspended due to freezing temperatures.
