The freezing weather has allowed people to see Shropshire and Mid Wales in all its glory as frost and ice transforms the region into a winter wonderland.

The area's many well known beauty spots now resemble scenes more often seen on traditional Christmas cards.

The plunging temperatures and low winter sun have provided colourful early morning views.

Visitors to the Mere at Ellesmere have been treated to spectacular sights in recent days as the sun slowly rises above the water. Frozen benches around the tourist spot have brought an aura of festive magic to the site as it is surrounded by a sea of white frost.

Across the border in Mid Wales, many visitors are hoping to see water frozen in time at the famous Llanrhaeadr Waterfall.

One of the Wonders of Wales, water flowing down the 240ft high falls near Oswestry can often freeze in very low temperatures, offering a sight which must be seen to be believed. January Facey, of the waterfall tearoom, said the cascading water had not quite frozen this year but the natural wonder still provided a spectacular winter view.

She said: "It froze last year but so far it is still flowing. I think because we had so much water falling in November that the water has been gushing down the waterfall in recent weeks and obviously gushing water will not freeze.

"It is still an amazing sight at this time of year and many people will come up here to have a look in the winter. We have not had as many visitors as previously so far because I think the road up here from the village is difficult to negotiate.

"The gritters have now come out so you can get here safely. I would urge people to come if they can because the waterfall in the winter is absolutely lovely.

"I think it is supposed to warm up over the weekend so people should come now if they want to see the waterfall covered in icicles. The people who have come up so far said it was a wonderful sight."

More wonderful sights were on offer at Buttington near Welshpool where the area's floodplains and trees looked spectacular.
