This week's pictures from the past

The Shropshire Star's nostalgia pictures for the week ending February 13, 2010.

There goes the bride. . . This is an unknown wedding and the location is uncertain, although Roy Pilsbury who loaned this to us thinks it is at Meole Church, Shrewsbury. The date is vague as well, but it may be 1950s or 1960s.

The car is a Rolls-Royce and was one of Taxi Lea's wedding cars. Roy says the photo is from the Frank Painter Collection.

It was given to Alan Painter by a Mrs Lea. "Everybody used to know them as Taxi Lea's, as they had a taxi business in Belle Vue in Shrewsbury," says Roy.

Here's a view of St Mary's Church at Knockin from many moons ago.

We don't know exactly how long ago this photo was taken, but we shall guess at about 100 years. It is from an album of postcards which was loaned to us by Mrs Diana Humphreys, of Maesbrook, near Oswestry.

Here is a flashback to happier days at the West Mid Show at Shrewsbury, as fondly remembered by Patrick Wood of Church Stretton, who loaned this picture from the 1966 event.

He says the old family firm of JP Wood & Sons (Poultry) Ltd of Craven Arms, probably better known as Chukie Chicken and Turkeys, always used to exhibit, taking up about half a marquee.

"I remember the photograph attached was probably the company's answer to the computer age – 6d reward and a free Chukie recipe if you answered the question correctly. Pictured from left are: Basil Wood, my uncle; Jean Wood, my mother, Barbara Wood, my auntie, who now lives in Wistanstow; and Samuel Ernest Wood, my great uncle, my grandfather's brother, who was known to everyone as Uncle Ernie.

"He was the brother to J P Wood, that is, James Percy Wood who died in his 40s, and from whom the company derived its name. Uncle Ernie worked for JP Wood & Sons for many years."

Fancy a dip? These lads are at the swimming pool at Wyre Farm School Camp, also known as the City of Coventry Boarding School, just outside Cleobury Mortimer.

It looks likely to be the 1950s or 1960s.

The school opened in 1940 for children evacuated from the Blitz in Coventry. It closed, according to a cutting, in 1982 and is these days the Pioneer activity centre and Pioneer conference centre - this photo is from Pioneer's archives.

Thank you all! We are looking in on an evening meal and entertainment put on for newspaper boys and girls to thank them for their efforts in delivering papers in the cold winter of early 1963.

This was e-mailed to us by Phil Stringer, who was one of the young lads who kept the papers delivered.

Phil said: "I delivered Sunday papers for George Fawcett in Castle Foregate.

"My round was from the shop in Castle Foregate along St Michael's Street going as far as the Midland Red garage."

The invitation read: "The members of the Shrewsbury branch of the Retail Newsagents, Booksellers and Stationers invite you to attend The Music Hall, Shrewsbury, at 7pm, on Tuesday 12th March, 1963, as their guests for an evening meal and afterwards to a picture show and light entertainment, in appreciation of your loyalty to duty during the very inclement weather of recent weeks."
