An icy blast returned to Shropshire coating much of the county in snow - as forecasters said this winter is shaping up to be the coldest for 30 years.

Snow fell across the county yesterday, with northern parts such as Market Drayton and Oswestry including Breidden Hill near Llandrinio, and the Ludlow area in south Shropshire seeing some of the worst of the weather.

Other parts of the county, such as Telford & Wrekin, also woke to a covering of snow yesterday morning.

Elsewhere in the country, Wales and other parts of the central belt of England bore the brunt of the latest icy blast with Manchester Airport temporarily shut for snow clearance and the A616 linking Sheffield and Manchester also closed due to heavy snow yesterday.

Rob Hutchinson, forecaster with MeteoGroup, said: "This winter is shaping up to be the coldest for 30 years.

"There is a 95 per cent chance that the period will have been the coldest since the winter of 1978/79." Winter temperature as a whole is measured in a three-month block. Forecasters said that they would only be able to confirm if this season was the coldest for 30 years at the end of this month.

In Shropshire, people took the chance to make snowmen in areas which were worst affected yesterday.

Animals were also seen enjoying the snow near Ellerdine.
