IN PICTURES: Rain fails to dampen festive spirit at Newport's Christmas lights switch on
The people of Newport came out in their hundreds despite the rain to support the annual switching on of the Christmas lights.
Santa made an appearance and youngsters were able to tell him what presents they would like this year.
The switch-on, which took place in the High Street, saw Newport youngster Henry Vazquez press the button to turn on the lights.
Henry, who attends SS Peter & Paul Catholic Primary School, was the winner in a Christmas gift tag competition organised by Newport Town Council.
Before the lights were lit, there was a procession from the Guildhall to the Butter Cross.

The switch-on was followed by a sing-along at St Nicholas Church.
The tree of light opposite Adams Grammar School was also turned on.
