Greg James, who is the current early breakfast show DJ with Radio One, was due to perform a 90-minute set at the Buttermarket venue in Howard Street. A Black Country DJ today described how he kept broadcasting his US student radio programme as 32 people were shot dead around him in America's worst mass shooting. Tom Porter, aged 37, of Walsall, locked himself in his studio as a gunman killed before shooting himself. Mr Porter told listeners to keep off the streets and lock their doors during the massacre at Virginia Tech University, Blacksburg, Virginia. He said: "I thought the best thing I could do was just to keep calm and keep on going. I was only five minutes walk from where the shooting was happening." Martin Childs, 31, of Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, plays a prison officer in tonight's episode and takes murderess Tracy, played by Kate Ford, to attend boyfriend Charlie Stubb's funeral. Mr Childs, who is a drive-time presenter for The Severn, based in Abbey Foregate, was challenged by a listener to get himself on TV and, as an experienced extra who has appeared in various programmes including Casualty, Dalziel and Pascoe and Doctors, he was certainly up for the challenge.
