Two 21-year-old men had an "extremely lucky" escape after faulty wiring caused a fire at a Shropshire home this morning.Two 21-year-old men had an "extremely lucky" escape after faulty wiring caused a fire at a Shropshire home this morning. The men managed to get out of the house after alerting the fire brigade to the blaze at Mount Pleasant in Ketley, Telford, just before 4am. Twelve firefighters tackled the fire in one of the first floor bedrooms at the detached house and were there for almost two hours bringing it under control and damping down. Crews from Telford Central and Wellington fire stations attended, along with the incident commander from Shrewsbury fire station. The two men were unhurt. Read more in the Shropshire Star

Fire chiefs in Liverpool said Kieran Murphy was minutes from death after firefighters with breaking apparatus found him unconscious on the floor of a communal kitchen in the accommodation at Liverpool Hope University. Firefighters said he was barely breathing and surrounded by thick toxic black smoke. A 21-year-old man today admitted raping and sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman in a Shropshire cemetery. A 21-year-old man today admitted raping and sexually assaulting an 80-year-old woman in a Shropshire cemetery. Haydyn Mellor, of no fixed abode, admitted carrying out the attack in the cemetery in Hengoed, Oswestry, on July 23. He appeared at Shrewsbury Crown Court today and pleaded guilty to two charges of rape, one of sexual touching and one of stealing the victim's purse. Read the full story in today's Shrosphire Star.

The family of a Shropshire man who died after a night out in Shrewsbury today paid tribute to a "popular" son and brother, saying his death had left a "large gap" in the lives of everyone who had known him.The family of a Shropshire man who died after a night out in Shrewsbury today paid tribute to a "popular" son and brother, saying his death had left a "large gap" in the lives of everyone who had known him. Chris Wall, 21, disappeared in the early hours of Thursday morning while he was on his way home to Castlefields in the town from a night at the Telepost Club in Abbey Foregate. His body was found in the River Severn early on Saturday. His mother Carol, father Tony and brother Graham today released a statement paying tribute to Mr Wall. They said: "Chris was a devoted brother to Graham. They were not just brothers, they were the closest of friends and dedicated much of their free time to each other."
