David Shaw, currently Deputy Chief Constable with the force, has been promoted to the top job following the retirement of Paul West. The appointment was announced today by West Mercia Police Authority and Mr Shaw will take up his new post in August, subject to ministerial approval. The changes are due to be brought in over the next month. They will include working in one force area - as opposed to the current four of Powys, Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion. Local policing will also be changed but force chiefs insist residents will not be short changed by the move.

A multi-million-pound international rail freight terminal in Shropshire has been branded "a white elephant" by campaigners, who have called for more to be made of the site. The £7.75m International Railfreight Park in Donnington, Telford, was expected to handle four trains a day when it opened in 2009. But in its first year just 50 trains used the centre - leading to calls today for part of the site to be used as a lorry park to help boost business. However, Telford & Wrekin Council chiefs have defended the terminal, saying they expected to make "significant" announcements about further new users in the next few weeks.

Daniel Kawczynski, MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, said Buildwas Power Station in Ironbridge had until 2015, to convert to clean-coal technology or biomass. After a meeting with the plant's directors Mr Kawczynski said he would being asking Prime Minister David Cameron for more incentives for power station operators to stop using coal. "Unless the power station converts to biomass by the end of 2015 the turbines will be turned off," said Mr Kawczynski.

In Shropshire there were queues outside Next stores as the retailer opened its doors at 5am for its sale. Debenhams and New Look in Telford Shopping Centre also opened their doors early. The Darwin, Pride Hill and Riverside Shopping Centres, in Shrewsbury, were expecting bumper crowds for the second day of big sales. Full story in today's paper
