The £7.75m International Railfreight Park in Donnington, Telford, was expected to handle four trains a day when it opened in 2009. But in its first year just 50 trains used the centre - leading to calls today for part of the site to be used as a lorry park to help boost business. However, Telford & Wrekin Council chiefs have defended the terminal, saying they expected to make "significant" announcements about further new users in the next few weeks.

Two professional snooker players have been detained by police over alleged irregular betting patterns surrounding their game in Telford. Two top snooker players were detained by police today over alleged irregular betting patterns during a UK Championship match in Telford. Stephen Maguire, 28, and Jamie Burnett, 33, were helping Strathclyde Police with their inquiries in connection with the outcome of the game on December 15. The investigation relates to the result of the first round match at the Telford International Centre. The clash between Maguire and Burnett, who are both Scottish, was subject to investigations by World Snooker and the Gambling Commission. The match was won 9-3 by the world No 2 Maguire. Maguire won after Burnett failed to pot a black ball that would have reduced his arrears to 8-4. A Strathclyde Police police spokesman said today: "Our economic crime unit can confirm that two men, aged 28 and 33, have been detained and are assisting Strathclyde Police with their inquiries into the alleged irregular betting pattern associated with the snooker match involving Stephen Maguire and Jamie Burnett." The unnamed man staked his change on an eight-horse accumulator. The lucky winner from Yorkshire was relying on his final three choices all to win their races at the Wolverhampton racecourse last night. The very first winner on his accumulator, at Sandown racecourse, was called Isn't That Lucky, while the winning horse which gave him the windfall came in at 9.20pm last night. The bet was placed at the William Hill branch in Thirsk. The £1 million the mystery punter took home is the limit William Hill gives winners on horse racing. Fergus Cameron, clerk of the course at Wolverhampton, said: "This is absolutely fantastic and you've got to be absolutely delighted for him - the rest of the country will be saying if only it was that easy."
