Langmead signed a new contract in the build-up to this afternoon's home clash with Hartlepool which will keep him at Gay Meadow until the end of the 2008/09 season.

The former Preston North End youngster has caught the eye of Town supporters since his dramatic transformation from centre forward to defender earlier in the campaign.

Today's news will allay any fears higher division clubs could swoop for the 21-year-old during the January transfer window.Meanwhile departing midfielder Steve Hogg has spoken of his disappointment at failing to establish himself at Shrewsbury Town.

The former Manchester United youngster quit Gay Meadow yesterday to join Scottish League division one leaders Gretna, initially until the end of the season.

Hogg moved on a free transfer, although Town will receive a quarter of any future sell-on.

But the player himself admits his departure is tinged with regret. "I'm really disappointed to be moving because I've enjoyed being at Shrewsbury," said the 21-year-old.

"I had moved in with Danny Hall and was settled and the fans were quality.

"I fancied my chances at the start of this season because I had four or five games at the end of last season and thought I could push on. But I got injured in pre-season and it hasn't happened for me since then.

"I would never knock the gaffer (Gary Peters) because he works so hard and he deserves success.

"But we probably had a difference in footballing ideas because I like the ball to be passed out from the back and he prefers to be slightly more direct."

Hogg, who plans to get digs in Gretna until the end of campaign, is excited at the prospect of working with two former Town colleagues - Mick Wadsworth and Colin McMenamin - and believes he has the ability to succeed north of the border.

"I have spoken to Colin quite a bit since he's been to Gretna and he's scoring goals for fun up there," said Hogg.

"Even though they are top of the table, he seems to think I've got a good chance of getting in the team.

"And Mick is one of the reasons I came to Shrewsbury so it will be great working with him again.

l Shrewsbury supporters are reminded the home clash with Wrexham on January 23 is all-ticket to ALL supporters.
