But a Kelvin Langmead header and two second half strikes from James Constable helped complete a remarkable transformation and gave Shrewsbury their most unlikely point of the campaign.
Peters is now hoping his young squad enjoy a huge injection of confidence from their dramatic exploits.
"We are really hoping the confidence and belief kicks in," he said.,
"The players have gone out and given the leaders a three goal start, gone after them, caught them up and had them and their coaching staff hanging on for a point at the end.
"For the first 20 minutes of the game, we were probably the better team but they started getting hold of the ball and proved why they are the best team in the division.
"But during that period everything they hit went in and that was the difference. Kelvin's header was important but we said at half-time that we had to stand up and be counted and the players did that.
"That is the spirit they have got. I have never doubted their willingness and enthusiasm because there isn't a day goes by when I don't see it.
"We probably gave them too much respect in the first half but it was a great comeback. It was probably the best point we have got all season but we aren't going to get carried away."
Constable earned the plaudits and the man-of-the-match champagne for his brace, but admitted Langmead's goal had laid the platform for the drama.
"That was massive because at 3-0 down at half-time, we would have had nothing to build on," added the 23-year-old forward.
"We knew if we could get it back to 3-2, we would have a great chance to get something out of the game.
"I'm obviously delighted with the two goals and, as a striker, scoring is something you never tire of so hopefully there is more to come.
"I said when I came that this was a dream move for me and the fans have been fantastic. I have never heard noise like it as we were pushing for the equaliser."
Town were today assessing Ben Davies' hamstring injury, but look certain to be without their skipper for Saturday's trip to Morecambe.
