Boss Paul Simpson today swooped to sign goalkeeper Matt Gilks on a month's loan from Blackpool in time for tomorrow's trip to Lincoln City.

The Rochdale born 26-year-old is likely to go straight into the starting line-up tomorrow, with first choice Luke Daniels - who is himself on loan from West Brom - still struggling for full fitness.

Glyn Garner has been filling in during Daniels' absence, but came in for flak for his howler that initiated Chesterfield's comeback in a 2-2 draw last Friday.

Gilks arrives after a frustrating time at Blackpool, where he has made just one appearance - a 2-0 defeat at Macclesfield in the Carling Cup - since signing from Norwich in the summer.

He got no first team action during a year at Carrow Road either, but previously came to prominence with almost 200 appearances during seven years with his hometown club.Meanwhile, Simpson is looking for Town to banish their away-day blues with a convincing performance at Lincoln .

Town have won just once in eight league outings on the road this season, the latest frustration coming at Chesterfield last Friday - when they led 2-0 only to be pegged back for a draw.

But Simpson felt they had been on top of their game for the first hour of that match and is confident that will have done a lot for the side's belief.

"You'd rather be winning, but I think our confidence got a lift with the way we played at Chesterfield.

"We did enough in that first 60 minutes to have won the game and we've got to take that into this weekend's game. We've got to do it over the full 90 minutes."

Simpson will be without suspended defenders Mike Jackson and Ben Herd, who have both accumulated five yellow cards, while Shane Cansdell-Sherriff is sidelined with an ankle infection.

Captain Ben Davies, who has been out after undergoing surgery for a hernia, has returned to training - and Simpson is not ruling out an earlier-than-expected place on the bench for the influential midfielder.

"It's something I'll think about," he said. "I'll see how he's reacted to training. He'll be involved in the squad, but whether I involve him tomorrow I don't know.

"He may need a few more days of footballing work to be right. There's no point me putting him on the bench if he couldn't do 89 minutes, because if there's a chance I might have to bring him on after a minute then he needs to be right for it."
