Paul Simpson's uncharacteristic blast after Tuesday's 1-0 derby win over Chester City suggested signs of nerves at the Prostar Stadium – but it is away from home that they have really struggled.

But, despite the well-documented dismal record on the road – which stood at an unimpressive one win in 15 before today's trip to Luton Town – Bet365 are still backing Town to be one of the four teams to go up.

"We still think that Shrewsbury have a decent chance," said spokesman Steve Freeth.

"We've backed them from the start because it looked like things were coming together for them, especially during pre-season and with the addition of Grant Holt.

"The home form is obviously one of the best in the league, but it's the away form that everybody is talking about. It's a shame because the league is there for the taking.

"Darlington, Bury, Brentford – there's still an awful lot of teams still involved. It's a very competitive league and we certainly can't call it. It's wide open."

Shrewsbury are 9-1to finish as champions but still only evens to go up, either automatically or by the lottery of the play-offs.

Freeth added: "I backed them pre-season myself so personally I would love to see Shrewsbury do it.

"Automatic spots are still there for the taking, but if not Shrewsbury would be a good bet for the play-offs because of their rock solid home form. Their remaining away games are winnable – but then we've been saying that all season."
