Bishop's Castle turned in a strong first half performance as they kicked their Midlands 4 West (North) campaign off with an 8-3 victory at Aldridge.

All the points came in that opening period - and Castle's margin of victory might have been a lot grater had their final pass and kicking been a little more consistent.

As it was, they had to defend well after the break , but a try for captain and winger Gary Waters and a penalty from full-back Matthew Willcock proved to be enough.

"The first half performance was very encouraging and with a little more matchplay and fitness we looked as though we could have easily scored another couple of tries," said Waters.

"We also need to practice our goal kicking as we missed five kickableÊchances. The second half was poor and we must improve our game play if we are to overcome stiffer opposition.

"All in all its a win away from home and, though their is a lot to improve on, there is a base on which we can build."

Ludlow were the only Shropshire side in action in Midlands 3 West (North), with Shrewsbury having kicked off their campaign a week earlier.

The south Shropshire side had little to celebrate as they fell to a narrow 17-13 defeat at Wednesbury.
