Davies throwing down gauntlet
Wolves strikers Jay Bothroyd and Jermal Johnson have been warned that they are under pressure to keep their places in the starting line up by a determined Craig Davies. Boss Mick McCarthy was delighted with the performance of Telford-based Davies when he brought him on for Bothroyd in the closing stages of Saturday's win over Colchester.
With Coventry visiting Molineux tonight in the Coca-Cola Championship, McCarthy has revealed Davies is working hard to earn a first-team start
"At the moment I feel Jay and JJ are the best choice pairing up front and it's up to someone to dislodge them," McCarthy.
"Craig is training hard and did well when he came on against Colchester.
"It's good for everyone at the club to see a performance like that when subs come on. It's good for the fans and it puts pressure on those coming off when they see their replacement chasing people down."
Meanwhile McCarthy is bidding to sign on-loan midfielder Darren Potter before the end of the season.
The Liverpool player has made the right-wing slot his own since joining on a season-long loan in the summer and McCarthy is keen to talk to the Anfield club about a deal.
Potter said last week he was interested in making his move to Molineux permanent, and the club may now begin negotiations before the January transfer window.
Enjoying
McCarthy said: "Darren has done very well, and, if a deal could be struck with Liverpool, we would be interested to talk to them.
"He's settled here an is enjoying his football. It means so much to players like him to be playing.
"If Liverpool wanted to let him go then we would be interested. There are a million ifs before anything is sorted out, but he is somebody I really like."
The former Republic of Ireland under-21 star has figured regularly in an unfamiliar role on the right of midfield and McCarthy has been impressed with what he has seen so far.
Liverpool may ask up to £500,000 for the midfielder, and could face competition from Southampton who were said to be interested after Potter impressed during a loan spell last season.
