Hawkstone Park Hotel, at Weston-under-Redcastle, has been bought by Principal Hotels for an undisclosed sum.

The deal was struck on Wednesday night.

Staff were told of the buy-out yesterday and a spokesman for the hotel chain today said it was delighted to have acquired the hotel.

Hawkstone Park has now officially joined the Principal Collection. Bosses have announced that the hotel will be expanded in the future.

Hotel bosses today said all jobs at Hawkstone were secure. They said it was too early to give further details of the expansion plans.

Tony Troy, chief executive of Principal Hotels, said "We are delighted with the addition of Hawkstone Park.

"At present it will remain as a stand alone hotel while development work is undertaken before being integrated into the Principal Hotel portfolio."

He said Principal Hotels would invest in a planned expansion to more than 100 rooms.

He said this formed part of the group's new strategy to develop golf destinations.

Their Principal Hotels sites include Selsdon Park Hotel and Golf Club in South Croydon.

Principal has also taken over the St David's Hotel and Spa, in Cardiff. The company has a collection of seven hotels across the UK.

Hawkstone Hotel and Golf Club is set in 400 acres of countryside and has three golf courses, conference and event facilities, restaurants and unique park land and follies.
