New Shropshire star Dan Redfern has backed the county to make a serious assault on the Minor Counties Championship when their campaign gets under way next weekend. The 17-year-old marked his Shropshire debut with a stunning century in the rain-affected victory over Northumberland in the MCCA Trophy at Oswestry yesterday. Redfern made his ton in just 105 balls, before eventually being bowled for 107 in the win, which was secured by virtue of a superior run-rate. Redfern made his ton in just 105 balls, before eventually being bowled for 107 in the win, which was secured by virtue of a superior run-rate.

Redfern, who is also on the books of Derbyshire and made his First Class debut last year, put on 174 for the second wicket with Jono Whitney, who made 82.

"It's a great start for me and I'm thrilled with it," he said. "Jono was aggressive as well.

"It was a shame he didn't get a century too, but he was trying to up the run-rate and it's good to see someone playing for the team instead of worrying about their own score.

"I won't be available for all the Championship games because they clash with Derbyshire IIs games," he added.

"But I think Shropshire can do well. We've got a lot of talented players in the county and if we can get a win early on it will be a boost."

Shropshire team manager Trevor Sheperd took a lot of positives out of the win over Northumberland, even though it was not enough to see them top their group and qualify for the semi-finals.

"The way Jono Whitney adapted himself was superb, and if he played like that regularly he'd get rucks of runs," he said. "Then there was Dan, and he has so much time and class. He was a pleasure to watch and I congratulate him.

"The three spinners were superb. Asif Sultan was outstanding, Andy Gray was very good, and Mark Robinson was cracking, getting three wickets.

"Robbo is proving to be the bowler we all thought he was going to be in the early days."
