Nevertheless he was well placed to make the halfway cut as he prepared for his first competitive round on the Old Course today.
The top 40 players after today's round progress to the last 36 holes which will be played over the Old Course tomorrow.
The competition has attracted 144 of the world's top amateurs from 18 countries, with the worst handicap being +2.
