The former Lilleshall Hall man surged into a two-stroke lead at the Open AGF Allianz Côtes d'Armor Bretagne after a second round of three under par 67 took him to nine under 131. It moved him ahead of the rampaging Ross McGowan, who carded a brilliant 62, and Andrew Oldcorn.

Baker is currently 23rd on the rankings with just four events of the Challenge Tour season remaining - with the top 20 earning an automatic tour card.

With three European Tour career victories, and having excelled in one of golf's most intense competitions - the Ryder Cup - Baker is confident that he can do enough over the next four weeks to break back into the Challenge Tour's top 20.

"I think my experience will count for something in the run in," said Baker, who memorably secured three points out of four against the USA in the 1993 Ryder Cup.

"It's the one advantage I have over these young guys that I am up against out here - I have been in pressure situations before and come through, so I hope to do enough to get my card back.

"I'm enjoying it as well, and played some nice stuff yesterday."
