Church Stretton's Jonathan Gidney produced a superb final round 67 to go with his course record-breaking 66 in the morning to win the Welsh Open Youths Championship at the Vale of Llangollen.

Gidney, who finished 11th in the Brabazon Trophy, the England Amateur Open strokeplay championship at Trevose last month, was in sparkling form over the weekend opening with a 71 and 72 on the Saturday before wrapping things up yesterday with a 14 under par total of 274.

The nearest Shropshire and Herefordshire golfer to him was Llanymynech's Mark Trow who was undone by a second round 81 to finish 12th on five over.

l S&H's first team won their first Midlands League match of the seson bating Derbyshire 8.5-6.5 at Chesterfield.
