Gidney set to turn pro

Shropshire's leading amateur golfer Jonathan Gidney will be turning professional later this month.

The plus-three handicapper from Church Stretton will join the paid ranks on September 22 in time for the first stage of European Tour qualifying school.

The 22-year-old resisted the temptation to turn professional 12 months ago, but feels he is now at the perfect stage of his career to take the plunge.

"Things are very exciting for me and I feel it is the perfect time for me to turn pro," said Gidney.

"Having an extra year as an amateur was very sensible and the experience I have gained has been invaluable.

"I'm treating qualifying school as a test. If I get a European Tour card then great – if not I'm prepared to work my way up the ranks.

"I can't wait."

An an amateur, Gidney has made three appearances for England after becoming a member of the 'A' squad 12 months ago.

He claimed the Shropshire & Herefordshire Matchplay title earlier this year, won the Welsh Open Youths in 2008 and claimed three successive Midland Youth titles from 2006 to 2008.

Gidney's first professional appearance will come at The Oxfordshire where he will be attempting to move on to the second stage of European Tour qualifying as he attempts to join the continent's elite on the main circuit.

Before then, Gidney will make his final Shropshire & Herefordshire first team appearance against Nottinghamshire at Coxmoor on Sunday, and compete in his last tournament as an amateur – the Shropshire & Herefordshire Open at Bridgnorth on Saturday week.
