A Shropshire rugby league player has been selected to play for Great Britain.

Matt Evans is the first Telford Raider ever to be picked for the Great Britain Community Lions.

"It's the highest honour any Community Rugby League player can achieve," said a Raiders spokesman.

Despite having a difficult season at club level, when Raiders had to withdraw from their league, Evans' power pace and skill as a forward stood out.

It led to him gaining international recognition with the England Lionhearts in the Four Nations.

Evans was a star performer and was instrumental in England's campaign.

GB Lions will travel to Perpignan to take on France A, eager to avenge a 22-16 loss when the two sides met earlier this season at the Belle Vue home of Wakefield Wildcats.

Four young Raiders gained representative honours for the Midlands at the Rugby League National Carnival - Jack Baker, Eddie Foulkes, Adam Lloyd-Butler and Dan Codling.
