Telford have become the latest Shropshire boxing club to hit the championship trail.

Fresh from Midlands title glory for Shrewsbury ABC and Shrewsbury & Severnside ABC, Telford are now closing in on regional success with lightweight Calvin Hamilton.

He overcame Worcester's Michael Mooney in West Bromwich to reach the Midlands semi-finals of the Senior Novice ABAs, which are expected to take place on November 15.

Hamilton,17, came out on top of the bulk of the exchanges - despite giving away seven years in age - to earn a majority points verdict.

But it was the end of the road for Telford's super heavyweight Alex Bloomer, who was beaten on points by Worcester's Ashley James.

Bloomer staged a fine fightback in the closing round, but suffered a torrid time in the opening two sessions and was beaten on points.

"We are very pleased with both of our lads," said Telford ABC coach Ryan Bratley.

"They both adapted well to the circumstances and gave a great account of themselves and the club. We now look forward to seeing Calvin continue his assault on the Midlands lightweight title."

Meanwhile, Nathan McFarlane made a winning debut for Telford in Stafford against home boxer James Harrot.

Fighting at 63kgs, McFarlane was fast out of the blocks and within five seconds had sent Harrot to the canvas with a perfectly placed left hook.

The more experienced Harrot boxed his way out of trouble but the reprieve was only temporary, McFarlane's constant pressure bringing a stoppage with 30 seconds remaining of the first round.
