The Shrewsbury-born 35-year-old shot a one under par 69 in the first round at Fanling, though that still left him six shots adrift of leader Robert-Jan Derksen, who was in the clubhouse with a 63.

Drummond needs a top five finish to assure his place on the European Tour next season.

He currently lies 136th on the Order of Merit, 40,000 euros short of the top 115 automatic qualifiers.

The leading Brits in Hong Kong are Lee Westwood and Rory McIlroy, who are currently tied for 16th position after opening rounds of 66.
