BMX club is one of Britain's best

Shropshire's Wrekin Riders BMX club are celebrating after receiving notification that they are one of the top 10 sports clubs in Britain.

After being awarded both Telford & Wrekin's and Shropshire's sports club of the year awards, the Telford-based BMX club were nominated for the national sports club of the year.

The Central Council for Physical Recreation national sports awards received well over 100 nominations from either county sports partnerships or governing bodies of sports.

The clubs were then marked on numerous criteria, including innovation and foresight.

Wrekin Riders BMX club were not only short-listed, but they were the voted ninth best sports club in the country, Oundle Town Rowing Club voted tops.

Wrekin spokesperson Alex Fowlie said: "We are very proud of representing Shropshire and gaining a top 10 national place for sports clubs.

"It is recognition for the important role we play in encouraging more children and young people into sport.

"If we are lucky enough to be nominated next year we will endeavour to do even better."
