Defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal to stay at Shrewsbury Town.

The Aussie was one of five out-of-contract players offered terms at the end of the season, and boss Graham Turner today confirmed that he was staying put.

Cansdell-Sherriff follows in the footsteps of Harry Hooman, Kevin McIntyre and Benjamin van den Broek in accepting the club's offer - with top scorer Dave Hibbert the only man to go. He has joined League One side Peterborough instead.

The offers were made long before Turner's appointment to the Town hotseat, but he is delighted to have Cansdell-Sherriff on board.

"You've got to have a bit of competition for places and he's comfortable on the ball," said the 62-year-old, who is starting his second spell at the club, 26 years after ending his first.

"I'm expecting another signing in the next 24 to 48 hours and then it's a learning process for me over the next seven to 10 days so that we can be ready for pre-season.

"I'm going to have a chat for an hour or so with the coaches Dave (Hughes) and Michael (Jackson) to get their thoughts on the players, and we'll take it from there."

Meanwhile, former Hereford boss Turner admits the wage bill at Shrewsbury is "considerably more" than the one with which he operated at Edgar Street.

But the 62-year-old insists that money alone is no guarantee of success.

"There's a bit more scope," he confirmed. "The wage levels here are considerably more than at Hereford.

"But, irrespective of what sort of pay is given out, it's getting the spirit in the club where people, want to play, want to train and want to be successful.

"I've known players who will sign a two-year contract and then sit on that contract and be happy to just turn up.

"We've got to engender that desire to be successful, and I would imagine it wouldn't be too difficult with the squad of players here."
