Liam Davies, the wonder-kid of Shropshire boxing, gets his chance to prove he's the best 14-year-old fighter in Europe next month, writes MIKE LOCKLEY.

Davies, having already seen off the best boxers in England, Wales and Scotland, has received a dream call to represent his country in the European Schoolboy Championships.

They take place in Yambol, Bulgaria, between July 19 and 25.

It's the second time the Donnington ABC boxer has been selected by his country. Last time, little Liam struck gold in the Three Nations tournament.

And grandfather Brian Davies, who runs the Donnington gym, believes Liam can enjoy similar success in Bulgaria where he will fight at 38 kilos.

He said: "I don't think people realise what a force Liam is. If he's strong at the weight, he's got a very good chance, but there's always a bit of luck attached to tournaments like this." Club fighters Yassar Naseer and Jack Fletcher have put holidays on hold to help Liam prepare for his biggest ever test.

And on July 4, Davies takes part in England squad training in Manchester.

Success in Bulgaria would be the biggest achievement by any Shropshire schoolboy boxer.

Davies Snr added: "To date, Liam has done everything asked of him. Now we're taken it to a different level."
