Oliver Farr is in contention for the biggest success of his golfing career - over a course where Tiger Woods won one of his three Open championships.

The Ludlow-based Welsh international fired a second round 68 around Hoylake - where Woods was successful in 2006 - in the prestigious Brabazon Trophy, the English Amateur strokeplay championship.

Following on from his opening 67 on Thursday, that left him on two-under-par and in a tie for fourth position, he was two shots behind the lead held by Tyrrell Hatton at the start of today's third round.

"Yesterday was probably my best ball striking round of the year," said Farr.

"The only disappointment was I bogeyed the last but it's great to be in contention."

Shropshire & Herefordshire first team captain John McQuillan caddied for the 22-year-old in Thursday's first round, while Farr's father Graham is on the bag through the weekend.

On the professional scene, Shrewsbury' Scott Drummond was hoping for a strong weekend in the latest European Tour event.

He began today's third round of the BMW International Open in Munich on six-under-par seven shots off the lead held by Welshman Bradley Dredge.

Lilleshall Hall's Peter Baker missed the cut.
