The countdown to Shrewsbury's big Carling Cup trip to Stoke kicked off today - with a glowing tribute to Town boss Graham Turner from counterpart Tony Pulis.

Town make the short trip to the Potteries on Tuesday for a night in the spotlight and a second round tie against Premier League opposition.

Stoke manager Pulis has already heaped high praise on Turner, and insisted he won't be taking Shrewsbury lightly - even if he does decide to tinker with his Premier League starting line-up.

"Graham has been highly respected in the game over many years, and quite rightly so," said Pulis.

"To buy and run a club like Hereford was a huge commitment for him and I'll bet he's as pleased as punch to get that weight off his shoulders and become a manager again.

"I think he was chairman, manager, coach and scout at Hereford. He must have a heart as big as anything to take that on.

"But most of all Graham is a very good manager and he will have his team well prepared.

"Shrewsbury have had a good start to the season and I'm sure they will be well supported on the short journey to our place.

"It will be an occasion for them, so we've got to make sure our players are ready and up for what will be a tough game."

Pulis insisted Stoke would again take "all competitions seriously" after they reached the Carling Cup quarter finals in 2008-09 and the FA Cup quarter finals last season.

He added: "The Cups are important to us and it would be very nice if Stoke City could walk out at Wembley in the not too distant future. But all we will be thinking about on Tuesday is picking a team to beat Shrewsbury.

"I will make a few changes, but it will be a strong side. It will be an opportunity for some of the players who are currently on the fringes to show me they should be in the team."

Shrewsbury officials are hoping a travelling support in excess of 2,000 will make the short trip along the A53 on Tuesday.

Away Travel Club officials have already filled two coaches for the game, with demand still high.
