A terrific defensive display saw AFC Telford United return from Blue Square Bet North leaders Alfreton with a hard-earned point.

Alfreton created the best chance of the first half, Telford keeper Ryan Young reacting well to keep out a goalbound header from Tom Naylor.

But the Bucks had their moments too, going closest when Phil Trainer's rasping drive from 25 yards was parried by Alfreton No 1 Paddy Gamble.

The major talking point came in the second half, a Liam Murray header off a Greg Mills free-kick crashing down off the bar. Away fans and players all insisted that it had crossed the line but referee David Lawrence let play continue.

Alfreton enjoyed plenty of pressure after that but the Telford defence held firm.

And the game ended on a sour note for the hosts, Paul Clayton sent off for a two-footed lunge on Shane Killock.
