Ludlow racecourse was today dealt a fresh savage blow after suffering a fourth successive abandoned meeting.

Optimism was high earlier in the week that this afternoon's National Hunt card would encounter no problems after a trio of weather-related cancellations at the south Shropshire track either side of Christmas.

But lower than expected overnight temperatures created concerns and the course failed a 9.30am inspection.

"The forecasts were saying 0 to minus 2c but we actually got down to minus 5.5c on the course," said disappointed clerk Bob Davies.

"The worst areas are where the golf course fairways cross the course."

Ludlow's next scheduled meeting is Monday, January 31.
