Shropshire golfer Oliver Farr has given his hopes of appearing in the Walker Cup a major boost.

Ludlow's Farr successfully defended the Trubshaw Cup, one of the biggest events of the amateur season in Wales, by a massive nine shots.

And that was the perfect response to missing the cut in the Duncan Putter at Southerndown - another title he was defending - a week earlier.

Farr carded rounds of 69 and 66 at Ashburnham on Saturday, the latter being a new course record.

And he signed for identical rounds at Tenby, the other host course of the Trubshaw Cup, yesterday to finish nine clear of Welsh international team-mate Rhys Pugh.

Farr has been included in the initial 23-man Great Britain & Ireland squad to face the Americans in the Walker Cup - the amateur version of the Ryder Cup - at Royal Aberdeen in September.
