An appearance at the 2012 US Masters and next month's Open Championship was today just five tantalising rounds away for Shropshire golfing aces Oliver Farr and Ashley Chesters. Ludlow's Farr and Chesters, of Hawkstone Park, both won their opening matchplay game at the British Amateur Championship in Hillside yesterday. And they were today playing in the last 32 of a tournament which began with 288 hopefuls and carries entries into the two Major championships for whoever is crowned winner on Saturday night. [24link]
Farr was in action against Sweden's Oskar Arvidsson today after seeing off Woolston Manor's Ross Dee by one hole yesterday.
The Ludlow ace had the chance to seal victory on the 17th before lipping out with a 10ft effort when one up, but he exchanged pars on the last to seal victory.
Chesters, 21, led only once in his clash against Belgium's Thomas Detry yesterday – but that was when it mattered most on the first extra hole.
The crucial moment came when Chesters – who had his mother Gina as caddie – eagled the 547-yard 17th when one down, holing a 40ft putt to level the match before clinching victory at the 19th when his opponent had a bogey.
He was facing Moor Park's Matthew Wallace, who beat leading qualifier Gregory Eason yesterday, in the second round.
Both Shropshire hopefuls came through two rounds of strokeplay at Hillside and Hesketh to reach the last 64.
