Irish snooker ace Ken Doherty met his match on the green baize in Shropshire when he was beaten by a county player.

Tom Maxfield, from Telford, was one of a dozen hopefuls who took on the former world champion at Market Drayton's Royal British Legion Club last night.

Organisers today said Tom was the only contender who managed to clinch a frame from the Dubliner, who won the World Snooker Championship at The Crucible Sheffield in 1997.

Organiser Colin Pink said: "I think Tom managed a 57 break along the way to winning his frame. He was the only one who managed it so he did very well."
