Dawley could become a sporting hub for the West Midlands if a £1.5 million bid is approved by Sport England.

The cash would be ploughed into the Dawley Sports and Co-operative Learning Community, which is currently being built, and be used to create a national BMX track, a floodlit artificial rugby pitch and a large sports hall.

The plans are likely to be approved at a Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet meeting on Thursday.

Council chiefs say the plan would also enable the growth of netball and table tennis in the borough.

Councillor Paul Watling, a member of the council's cabinet, said: "These facilities at Dawley Sports and Co-operative Learning Community are wonderful news for Telford and Wrekin."

Councillor Arnold England, cabinet member, said: "The project will be regarded nationally as a 2012 legacy facility and will strengthen the council's national reputation and relationships with Sport England who are already considering the project as a national case study."
