England international golfer Ashley Chesters today saw his hopes of winning a major amateur tournament in Australia ended.

Shropshire & Herefordshire ace Chesters, who plays out of Hawkstone Park, was knocked out of the New South Wales Amateur Championship by Ireland's Reeve Whitson when he suffered a 4&3 defeat at Elanora in the first round.

The 22-year-old qualified for the matchplay stages, featuring 32 players, by finishing 23rd in last week's New South Wales Medal.

The defeat brings to an end a month-long Australian trip for Chesters, the highlight of which was a ninth place finish in the Master of the Amateurs at Royal Melbourne.
