Will Enefer has forced his way into Shropshire & Herefordshire's team of six for the Midlands qualifier of the English County Championships.

The 14-year-old's dramatic victory in the County Amateur at Lilleshall last Sunday prompted captain Andy Stevenson to turn to the Wrekin youngster to complete his sextet for the biggest event of the year.

And Stevenson is confident Enefer will rise to the occasion when the 36-hole event takes place at Belton Park in Lincolnshire next Saturday.

The skipper said: "Will's performance at the amateur was fantastic and he deserves his place in the team.

"Lilleshall is quite similar to Belton Park.

"The fact that Will played well there bodes well.

"We want to select players who are getting better.

"That doesn't mean it has to be kids but we want people who have got promise and Will ticks that box."

Enefer certainly proved his ability to cope under pressure at Lilleshall.

Rounds of 69 and 71 saw him clinch a spot in the play-off at four-over-par.

Two birdies in sudden death saw him see off the challenge of home course hope Ed Tranter and Market Drayton's Matt Birch, who set a new course record with an afternoon 66.

Birch joins Enefer on the team heading to Belton Hills for a practice round next Friday, where they will be joined by Hawkstone Park's England international Ashley Chesters, Wrekin duo Jamie Brittain and Kris Williams, Birch and Oswestry's Will Jones.

Tranter has been selected as travelling reserve for a testing format in which all six medal scores count in both the morning and afternoon rounds.

S & H finished bottom of the 10-team pile last season but Stevenson is encouraged with the team at his disposal next weekend.

He said: "We have got a very good team. We are going there with the intention of trying to win or there is no point even going."
