The recent snow has forced the organisers of the Eyton Races to call off the horse racing event on Monday.

Neptune Collonges, who won the famous Grand National steeplechase at Aintree last year, was to be paraded at the annual south Shropshire point-to-point races.

Phil Jones, chairman of the Eyton Races Organising Committee, said: "We are very disappointed to have to cancel our traditional Easter Monday race meeting – particularly as it is our 90th anniversary this year.

"However, given the recent severe weather and the poor forecast ahead, it is just not possible for the races to go ahead.

"We are now focusing on our plans for the North Shropshire Hunt race meeting on May bank holiday on May 6 which will include a joint North Shropshire Hunt and South Shropshire Hunt Members' Race.

"I hope as many people as possible will join us then for our anniversary celebrations."

Point-to-point racing is a form of amateur horse racing over fences for hunting horses.

The traditional Eyton race meeting is held every year near Wenlock Edge.

Neptune Collonges is owned by Cosford businessman John Hales and trained by Paul Nicholls.

It was jockey Daryl Jacob who won the Grand National on the horse last year.
