Richards has left Shawbury after two successful years at the West Midlands Premier Division side which culminated in a Shropshire Challenge Cup victory in April.

Drayton's director of football Andy Cooke confirmed the appointment saying: "Dave has got enthusiasm in abundance.

"He knows what it is about and he has had some good lads play for him at Shawbury. He has also got some good contacts."

Richards succeeds previous Greenfields boss Jimmy Mullen, who departed the club towards the end of last season with survival in Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South confirmed.

Mullen took over a side languishing in the lowest reaches of the division and guided them to 15th and 16th-placed finishes in consecutive seasons during his two-year spell.

Richards, who won two promotions in three years with Wem Town, admitted that the chance to manage at NPL level was too good an opportunity to turn down.

He said: "I have mixed emotions leaving Shawbury but if I didn't take this chance, in a few years time I would have probably regretted it.

"I am under no illusions how tough it is going to be following Jimmy Mullen but I am confident I can give it a good go."
