Can it really be a year since Murray came so close but yet so far?

Well, now he's got a Grand Slam in the bag maybe this year really will be the year that Andy Murray is crowned king of SW19.

Wimbledon 2013 begins today with all eyes on the Scot. The draw has been favourable - well, as favourable as it could be - and now it's down to Murray to do the business.

Of course, there are plenty of people in his way. No, not Benjamin Becker, his first round opponent, but the big three of Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

They will all go headlong into each other in the final eight, the pundits predict.

A safe passage through to the quarters is all Andy wants, ideally by dropping as few sets as possible. And then it's down to the nerves.

Of course, Wimbledon isn't just about the top players. It's a time when the whole of the United Kingdom dusts off their tennis rackets and gets back on the court.

We have already seen a surge in activity at our three centres in England - at Oakengates in Telford, at Kilsby in Rugby and Cromer in Norfolk.

Everyone's got the tennis bug at the moment and our coaches are working flat out to ensure as many people can make the most of our facilities as possible.

We have a range of activities on offer from toddlers through to senior citizens so tennis isn't just for the elite athletes like Murray and Djokovic.

I'll be blogging throughout Wimbledon fortnight for the Shropshire Star and will hope to give readers some tips along the way.

Whether you are brushing up on your game or just happy to watch the action on the television, have a great Wimbledon fortnight and here's to a home-grown winner!

Tennis tip of the day:

Throw the ball up straight on the serve to help control. It's amazing how many people are off balance when they serve and then they wonder why it goes flying into the net.

Stay balanced by keeping the arm which has thrown the ball in the air aloft until you hit the ball.
