Day Four: Our man blogging on Wimbledon
Telford tennis coach Neil Devereux will be giving Shropshirestar.com his Wimbledon insights for the next fortnight as the action unfolds at SW19.
We have had Black Wednesday on the stock markets and now we have had Black Wednesday at Wimbledon!
No-one could have predicted such a catastrophic day for the top seeds with some of the biggest names in tennis sent tumbling out of the championships.
Roger Federer's scalp was, of course, the biggest of all, after a sensational defeat at the hands of Ukrainian Sergiy Stakhovsky. But the tournament lost all manner of big names and former world No 1s.
The likes of Maria Sharapova, Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Lleyton Hewitt will all having to find something else to do for the second week.
Federer's defeat will send shockwaves through the rest of the field but, tellingly, leaves it wide open for Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic to stroll through to the final stages.
Only time will tell whether Roger's de-throning signals a changing of the guard, or whether it is just one of those fabulous sporting one-offs. Remember Lukas Rosol's victory over Rafael Nadal last year?
But, whatever happens in round three and beyond, you can bet that the tournament directors are frustrated at the departure of such big crowd-pleaders, regardless of whether it helps Murray or not.
As Wimbledon hots up, the tennis centre in Oakengates is busier than ever, which inadvertently means I get to watch less and less tennis!
With coaching sessions to organise as well as a big family fun day this Saturday, with free strawberries for everyone, my chances of watching the green stuff are diminishing each day.
Having said that, I will actually be at Centre Court today, so I can't wait to see some of the action in the flesh at last.
Tennis tip of the day:
Use a chopper grip on your serve to help hit with spin. It's not all about pace you know!
