The 20-year-old caused an upset by beating Sweden's Malin Ulvefeldt in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the qualifying event yesterday, with the Swede ranked 684th in the world.

McMinn, who plays at the Shrewsbury Club and Wrexham Tennis Centre is first match on Court One today and will play the No.6 seed, Marta Sirotkina from Russia.

She said: "I don't know anything about Marta. I will go out and play my game and do my best. At least I will have the advantage of playing on home courts and in front of local support."

Victory yesterday secured McMinn a world ranking, which will make qualification for future tournaments much easier.

She said: "I have always dreamed of achieving a world ranking. You need to get ranking points at three separate tournaments to get onto the world ranking list.

"Not only have I done that, but I did it at my home club in front of my family and friends so I couldn't be happier."

McMinn is also in the doubles tournament with fellow Brit Nicole Peterson.

The Aegon tournament has been a part of the Shrewsbury Club calendar for over five years and showcases some of the most exciting up-and-coming tennis talent.

Entry is free for all spectators throughout the week and live streaming of matches can be found on the Shrewsbury Club website.
