Hughes, 34, was in his fourth season as assistant manager at Prestatyn Town, having previously been involved as No.2 at Buckley Town, Rhyl and Caersws. As a player, he was a midfielder/striker with Buckley.

A sports development officer with Wrexham Borough Council, Hughes has also worked with the Welsh Football Trust in the past and holds the UEFA A licence.

"I wanted the opportunity to be No.1 at a Welsh Premier club and to test myself with a stable club, which Newtown is renowned to be," he said.

"It was too good an opportunity to miss. I know the players and what Bernie McNally has achieved on a low budget is remarkable and I am determined to keep their fine form going."
