Shropshire trainer Richard Lee has sights on Grand National double
Shropshire borders trainer Richard Lee is hoping his star chaser Mountainous can join an elite club of racehorses to win two Nationals in one season.
Only Rag Trade and Corbiere have achieved the feat before, but Mountainous could join them on Saturday in the £1m Grand National at Aintree.
Lee's Welsh National winner is looking increasingly certain to take his chance in the world's greatest steeplechase, with top jockey Jamie Moore booked for the ride and the weather forecast in his favour.
The nine-year-old, jointly owned by James and Jean Potter, from Leighton, near Welshpool, and Ffos Las racecourse supremo Dai Walters, operates best on rain-softened ground and showers are forecast between now and Saturday afternoon.
"The intention is to run him," said Lee, who trains at Byton, near Presteigne. "At the moment is it good to soft on the National course and I hope it will stay that way until Saturday. We could do with every drop of rain."
"Because he won the Welsh National at Chepstow on heavy ground people think that is what he needs," said Lee. "But it was almost too heavy for him at Ffos Las."
Mountainous will carry 10st 7lb and is currently a 40-1 shot with the bookies.
