Ellesmere Rangers complete a derby double
Ellesmere Rangers made it 10 wins from 11 games in their 13th match in 23 days by completing a derby double over Wellington Amateurs.
The Meresiders built on their 4-3 victory over Ams at the Wickes Stadium on Thursday night and Saturday's 4-1 home win over Bustlehome.
Marco Adaggio got the only goal of the game early in the second-half at Beech Grove, taking a touch from Mike O'Reilly's cross to ghost in and finish.
There's still no rest for Ellesmere as they are back in league action at Dudley Town tomorrow night having climbed to 11th, three points off the top 10.
Director of football Alan Davis said: "You possibly won't see a more one-sided 1-0 win than this, but the lads did look dead on their feet by the end of it.
"All we can do is keep going and Ams seemed to struggle against us. We played some good stuff, sprayed the ball around and got the goal that we needed."
Depleted Ams were without several first-team regulars including midfield duo Brody Milligan and Jamie King, which hampered their chances of taking points.
Joint boss John Psaras said: "We had a young side out there but they did OK. It was 4-3 against them on Thursday night and this was a lot closer than that.
"We shouldn't be playing on a Bank Holiday Monday, it's tough to get a full squad available and we were always going to be missing players. We needed them."
Hanwood United secured a sixth-place finish in Division One and finished the campaign on a high, beating hosts Shenstone Pathfinders 3-1 for their 10th win in 11 games.
Bouncing back from Saturday's 3-1 against Stone Old Alleynians, goals from Jordan Price and an Andy Harris penalty, for a foul on Jordan Wellard, put them 2-0 up.
The Villagers added to that with a third strike from player-manager Gary Price in the second-half, surviving a late Stone reply to ease to another three points.
Price said: "We can't grumble with how we finished, it wasn't a bad effort from the lads. We didn't play particularly well on Saturday and it was good to put that right."
