Godfrey Poku still on AFC Telford's radar
AFC Telford United ran the rule over long-standing target Godfrey Poku in last night's pre-season friendly against Wolves at the New Bucks Head.
The midfielder was tracked all last summer by manager Liam Watson, when he still had a year left to run on his contract at Football League club Mansfield.
Poku finished last season on loan at Skrill Conference Premier side Southport, where Watson had the player for a successful loan spell from Luton Town during the 2011-12 season.
The 24-year-old is now unattached, receiving severance pay from Mansfield, and looking for a club just as Watson's Bucks are returning to non-league's top flight.
And he impressed in last night's 1-1 draw against a Wolves Under-21 outfit, featuring infamous 'Bomb Squad' names at the The New Bucks Head.
The Telford boss said: "Last night was the first time we have seen him and we need to continue to assess where he is fitness wise, but he's proved to be an asset for me in the past.
"The last time we were in for him, he was in the driving seat as we were desperate to get him. The shoe is on the other foot a bit now, but he's still someone we are interested in."
Watson added he's in no rush to decide on his new captain for the upcoming season, having been left without a permanent skipper since Simon Grand left for Barrow.
He wants to see whether summer signing Steve Akrigg, who spent seven months on the sidelines through shoulder surgery before leaving Southport, comes through pre-season fit and well.
Winger Sean Clancy and even full-back Chris Lever could fill the role, but Watson may delay selecting his on-field leader until the last week of pre-season. He said: "There's no panic."
