Adlington, from Bayston Hill, swept to +78kg gold at Sheffield's English Institute of Sport with five wins from as many contests. The 27-year-old, who also claimed Commonwealth Games gold in the same category earlier this year, was presented with her medal by Olympic champion Kayla Harrison.

The American won gold in the division below Adlington's at London 2012. And Adlington took to Twitter afterwards to express her delight, tweeting: "Kayla gave me my medal today #dreamcometrue haha."

Adlington, who has been based in Edinburgh for nine years and represented Scotland in Glasgow 2014, took maximum points from all five of her bouts.

She is currently ranked world No.20 and recently went to a training camp in Japan as she chases a place at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Shettlestone's Ashley Fleming came second with Edinburgh's Michelle Boyle third.

However, defending British champion Edwards lost her crown when finishing second in the -52kg competition.

The Telford star, who represents Wrekin Star and also won silver in that division at the Commonwealth Games this year, was beaten to the top spot by Chelsie Giles of Coventry. It sealed a double for Giles, who also took junior gold.

Edwards did finish ahead of Scotland's Louise Rennicks, who beat her to Commonwealth gold earlier this year. Rennicks came third at the British Championships.

Edwards was philosophical after a solid showing in her final competition of 2014. She tweeted: "Some good judo to finish my busy year. #thankyou so much to everyone who has supported me this year! #MeansAlot #BringOn2015"

Like Adlington, Edwards is targeting a place at Rio and recently launched a fundraising campaign on the website Makeachamp.com.

She raised almost £3,000 to help her compete at World Cup events in Mauritius and Australia, where she picked up valuable ranking points.
