A double for Bridgnorth's Conor White

Bridgnorth golfer Conor White has two reasons to smile after becoming a Midlands champion.

The talented 16-year-old won the Midlands Youth Closed Championships, after carding a terrific four rounds at Stoke Rochford.

The tournament saw dozens of players up to 21 years of age contest the silverware.

White won first place in the competition, as well, as the coveted Howell Cup, which is awarded to the highest-placed competitor aged under-18.

He shot rounds of 72, 71, 69 and 67 for a one-under-par total of 279, before defeating Jake Benson of Beeston Fields in a play-off.

Shropshire & Herefordshire's chairman of junior golf Charles Sievewright said: "This is a fantastic result for Conor.

"It is a major Midlands championship and he has won it playing against players who are significantly older aged up to 21."

The Midlands Youth Open Championships were also held at Stoke Rochford the same day, with White narrowly missing out on first place.

He came second to Paul Waring of Felixstowe Ferry by a single shot. White earlier this month made his debut for the Shropshire & Herefordshire men's team.

But he said: "I think winning the Midlands Closed Championships is the best thing I have done so far because it is the one I have shot the best score in and I beat a player with a lower handicap in the play-off."

White is a scratch handicapper, while Benson plays off plus one.
